PROJECT DESCRIPTION

client

Historic Vehicle Association

Location

Gaithersburg, MD

Background

Bruce D. Judd, FAIA has been working with the Historic Vehicle Association to develop criteria and standards to list historic vehicles in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and documenting them for inclusion in the Historic American Building Survey (HAER).

Role

Bruce D. Judd, FAIA serves as a consultant to the HVA helping to develop criteria and standards used to record and preserve historic vehicles.

Scope of Work

The HVA is developing criteria to be used to record historic vehicles in a National Automotive Register as well as for the National Register of Historic Places. Criteria has also been established to document historic vehicles for the Historic American Engineering Record. These include photographs, laser scanning, which is used to prepare detailed measured drawings of vehicles, narrative descriptions and oral histories.

Standards will also be developed to assist vehicle owners in appropriate stabilization, repair, and restoration treatments similar to the "Secretary of the Interior's Standards" for the treatment of historic buildings.

The Shelby Cobra Daytona Coup was just registered in HAER and the Library of Congress. It is nationally significant based on four criteria.

"First, it is associated with important American and international competition events including the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) International Manufacturers' GT Championship series and land speed record runs at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

Second, it is associated with important automotive designers, builders and drivers such as Carroll Shelby, Peter Brock, Ken Miles, Phil Remington and Phil Hill.

Third, is the significance of its aerodynamic design, and the construction techniques that were used to build the car.

Fourth, is its information value as a prototype racecar that retains much of its original materials, components and finishes." - From the HAER Narrative Description.

Future listings may include the 1907 Thomas Flyer that won the New York to Paris race in 1908, the first Ford Pygmy, the oldest Jeep still surviving, the 1948 GM bus that made history when Rosa Parks rode it in 1955, the 1962 Studebaker Avanti, and the first minivan, the 1984 Dodge Caravan.
